Why the French number is higher
Standard European bands are close to the underbust in centimetres: a 75 is made for a ribcage of roughly 73 to 77 cm. French sizing adds 15 to that figure, so the same bra is a 90. Belgium and Spain follow the French convention.
Seeing 90 or 95 on a label and reading it as a European size would put you three bands out, so it is worth checking which convention a brand uses. A label that lists "EU 75 / FR 90" is showing both.
French cups
French cup letters generally follow the European sequence: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, with no double letters. That means they match the UK up to D and run one letter ahead from the UK's DD.
| French cup | D | E | F | G | H |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK cup | D | DD | E | F | FF |
French lingerie brands vary in how far their ranges go and how they letter larger cups, and some cut with a noticeably different cup shape from British brands. Use the brand's own guide where there is one, and treat the converted size as the first to try.
