How Australian sizing works
The band number is tied to Australian dress sizing: a 10, 12 or 14. It measures the same thing as a UK band, the ribcage under the bust, under a different label. The cup letters follow the British sequence, so a 12DD in Australia corresponds to a 34DD in the UK.
Two cautions
- The band is not your dress size. An Australian 12 band is for a particular ribcage measurement. Plenty of people who wear a size 12 dress need a 10 or a 14 band. Measure your underbust: a UK 34, or AU 12, corresponds to roughly 33 to 35 inches (84 to 89 cm).
- Some labels show several systems. Bras sold in Australia often print AU, UK, US and EU sizes together. Find the entry marked AU before converting.
Going the other way
To turn a UK size into an Australian one, subtract 22 from the band and keep the cup. A UK 36E is an AU 14E. The international bra size chart converts a UK size to every system at once.
