Two sizing systems
S, M, L and dress sizes
One size covers several bra sizes, and relies on stretch to do it. It works best for A to C or D cups. Each brand sets its own ranges, so always check its chart.
Band and cup
The same sizing as a wired bra. It gives a much closer fit and is the only dependable option from about a DD cup upward.
Typical S, M, L conversion
This is a general guide for A to D cups. Brands vary, and their own chart takes priority.
| Size | UK dress size | Typical bra sizes |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 6–8 | 30A–30C, 32A–32B |
| S | 8–10 | 30D, 32B–32C, 34A–34B |
| M | 12–14 | 32D, 34B–34C, 36A–36B |
| L | 14–16 | 34D, 36C–36D, 38B–38C |
| XL | 18–20 | 36D, 38C–38D, 40B–40C |
If you fall between two sizes
- Small band, fuller cup (for example 30DD): the size that fits your cup will be loose in the band. Look for cup-sized bralettes.
- Larger band, small cup (for example 38A): choose by band, and pick a style with a soft triangle or crop cut so that spare cup does not show.
- Generally: size by the band. A bralette that rides up gives no support at all.
Cup-sized bralettes for D cups and above
Several UK full-bust brands make non-wired bralettes in the same band and cup sizes as their bras, often labelled "fuller bust" or "DD+". Some use a hybrid system, such as S to XL with a separate "fuller cup" version of each. They are shaped with proper cups, darts or seams, and a wide band.
In these, start with your usual UK bra size. If the brand combines sizes, such as 32E/F, use its chart.
What gives a bralette support
- A wide, firm underband. This does most of the work, as in any bra.
- Lined or double-layer cups. A single layer of stretch lace gives coverage and little hold.
- Seams or darts in the cup, which create shape.
- Adjustable straps, and a hook-and-eye back in place of a pull-on band.
- A higher neckline or side panels for fuller busts.
How a bralette should fit
- The band lies flat on your ribcage, level all round, and stays there when you raise your arms.
- Your breasts are inside the cups, with nothing escaping underneath or at the sides.
- The fabric is smooth, without straining.
- The straps stay on without digging in.
The centre does not need to sit flat against the chest as it does in a wired bra.
Keep expectations sensible
A bralette gives a soft, natural shape with light to moderate support. It will not lift and separate like a wired, seamed bra, and at fuller cup sizes it is better for relaxed days than for all-day structure. For exercise, use a sports bra: the sports bra calculator will help with size.
Frequently asked questions
Do bralettes have cup sizes?
Most are sold in XS to XL or by dress size. A growing number are sold in band and cup sizes, particularly from full-bust brands, which make bralettes for D cups and above.
What size bralette should I get?
Go by your band first: it decides whether the bralette stays in place. Then check the brand's chart for your cup. If you are a DD or above, look for cup-sized or "fuller bust" bralettes, because standard S, M, L sizing rarely has enough cup.
Can you wear a bralette with a large bust?
Yes, in a style designed for it. Look for cup sizing, a wide firm underband, lined or double-layer cups, and adjustable straps.
