First question: does the dress need one?
Structured gowns often have an internal corselette, boning and sewn-in cups. They are built to support you without a bra. Soft, unstructured dresses in crepe, satin or chiffon usually are not. Ask when you buy. If the dress is nearly supportive enough, a seamstress can add cups or boning, which is often neater than any bra.
By neckline
| Dress | Usually works |
|---|---|
| Strapless or sweetheart | Strapless bra; longline strapless or basque for fuller busts |
| Off the shoulder, bardot | Strapless bra or basque |
| Deep V or plunge | Deep-plunge bra or bodysuit; tape; sewn-in cups |
| Low or open back | Low-back basque or bodysuit; adhesive cups; built-in support |
| Halter or high neck | Multiway bra with halter straps |
| Thin straps | Strapless or multiway; clear straps are rarely invisible in photos |
| Sleeved, modest neckline | A well-fitting everyday bra in a smooth fabric |
| Sheer or illusion panels | Sewn-in cups; ask the dressmaker |

Why a basque is worth considering
A basque, or longline strapless, extends from the bust to the waist or hips, with boning throughout. Because it grips the whole torso, it stays up far more reliably than a strapless bra, smooths the line under fitted bodices, and spreads the weight of a fuller bust. For D cups and above under a strapless gown, it is the most dependable choice. Check that its lower edge and boning do not show through the dress fabric.
Timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| After choosing the dress | Ask whether it is designed for a bra, and what the shop recommends |
| Before the first fitting | Get fitted and buy the bra or basque |
| Every fitting | Wear the same underwear and shoes |
| Two to three weeks before | Try everything together; re-check the bra size if your weight has changed |
| The week before | Wear the bra at home for an hour or two |
Getting the right size
- Have a fitting. Bridal underwear has to perform for twelve hours or more. A specialist lingerie shop or a bridal lingerie boutique is the best place. See the best places for a bra fitting in the UK.
- Test for a full day's wear. Sit, bend, raise your arms, dance.
- Colour. Under white or ivory, a shade close to your skin tone shows less than white.
- Seams and lace can show through fine fabrics. Check in daylight and with a flash photograph.
On the day
- No body lotion or oil where a strapless band or adhesive will sit.
- Keep fashion tape and a few safety pins to hand.
- If you are changing for the evening, plan the underwear for that outfit too.
Frequently asked questions
When should I buy my wedding bra?
Before your first dress fitting, so the dress can be altered over it. Take the same bra and the same shoes to every fitting.
Do I need a bra with a wedding dress?
Not always. Many wedding dresses have boning and cups built in, and a bra underneath can spoil the line. Ask the shop or your seamstress whether the dress is designed to be worn with one.
What if my size changes before the wedding?
Tell your seamstress, and check the bra a few weeks before. If you expect your weight to change, schedule the final dress fitting close to the date and be ready to replace the bra with the nearest size.
