Why people do it
- No wires, and often no fastenings
- More coverage and a secure feel
- Comfort for sensitive skin or sensory preferences
- Convenience on active days
- Ordinary bras that have never fitted well
If the last one applies, it is worth knowing that discomfort in everyday bras is usually a sizing problem that can be fixed. See why do my bras never fit?
Choose the right support level for the day
A high-impact sports bra is built for an hour of running. Its level of compression is more than you need at a desk, and it can feel restrictive after several hours. For all-day wear, choose low or medium impact.
| For | Choose |
|---|---|
| All day, light activity | Low or medium impact; soft, breathable fabric |
| Exercise | The impact level your activity needs |
| Fuller busts, all day | An encapsulation style with separate cups |
| Sleep or lounging | A soft crop top or sleep bra |
Things to watch
Skin
Sports bras hold fabric close to the skin over a larger area. Sweat trapped underneath can cause chafing, spots or a rash under the bust. Change out of a damp bra soon after exercise, choose wicking fabrics, and wash the bra after each sweaty wear.
Compression
Strong compression for many hours can be uncomfortable, particularly around the ribs and shoulders. You should be able to breathe deeply with ease. If you find yourself relieved to take it off, choose a less compressive style for everyday use.
Shape under clothes
Compression styles give a flatter, single shape. If you prefer a separated, rounded outline, choose an encapsulation sports bra or an everyday non-wired bra. See encapsulation vs compression sports bras.
Fit
The same rules apply as for any bra: a firm, level band, everything contained, straps that do not dig in. Check with how a sports bra should fit.
Wear and tear
Daily wear and frequent washing age elastic quickly. Rotate between at least three, and keep your high-impact bras for exercise so they keep their hold. Care advice is in how to wash and dry bras.
Alternatives with a similar feel
- Non-wired everyday bras, which now come with good support in a wide range of cup sizes.
- Cup-sized bralettes. See the bralette size guide.
- Lounge and sleep bras in soft cotton or modal.
See a GP or pharmacist about any persistent rash, breast pain or skin change. Those are not things to manage by changing bras alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to wear a sports bra every day?
No, provided it fits and you are comfortable. There is no good evidence that wearing a well-fitted sports bra daily harms your breasts. Problems come from bras that are too tight, damp, or worn out.
Can I sleep in a sports bra?
You can if you find it comfortable. Choose a soft, low-compression one. A tight, high-impact bra is not designed for hours of lying down.
Does wearing a sports bra all the time cause sagging?
There is no reliable evidence that any type of bra causes or prevents sagging over the long term. Changes in breast shape are driven mainly by age, genetics, weight change and pregnancy.
