Measuring on a softer torso
With more soft tissue around the ribs, the tape can read quite differently depending on how firmly you hold it. Take two readings: one snug, as firm as a comfortable band, and one tight, as far as the tape will go on an out-breath.
- If they are two or more inches apart, the band has plenty to settle into. Size by the snug reading, and when between bands choose the smaller.
- If they are close together, size by the snug reading and choose the larger of two possible bands.
Lift the breasts while you position the tape so that it sits on the ribcage in the crease, not on the tissue. Details in how to measure your underbust.
The common mistake: band too big, cup too small
This pattern is at its most frequent in larger bands. Research at the University of Portsmouth found that the traditional add-inches method grew more inaccurate as band size increased. Someone in a 42C whose band rides up may be a 38E: two bands down, and the same number of cup letters up plus one.
If your band lifts at the back, your straps dig in, or you spill over the top of the cups, re-measure and try the smaller band with a larger cup.
Features that make a real difference
- A deep band with three or four hooks. It spreads pressure and resists rolling.
- Side boning. A flexible bone in the side seam keeps the band at full height.
- A leotard or U-shaped back. It anchors the straps and stops them slipping.
- Wide, close-set straps.
- Firm fabric in the wings. Stretchy lace wings feel pleasant in the shop and give way within weeks.
- Seamed cups and side support from about a DD cup upward.
If your band folds or curls during the day, see bra band rolling up.
Where the range is widest
38 and 40 bands are stocked by almost every retailer in B to E cups. For 42 and above, and for D-plus cups on any of these bands, the choice is better at:
- Brands that specialise in fuller figures. Elomi, a sister brand of Freya and Fantasie, is designed specifically for larger bands with fuller cups. Curvy Kate makes bands up to 44.
- The larger high-street chains, many of which now run to a 44 band or beyond in their main ranges.
- Plus-size fashion retailers with their own lingerie lines.
Small cups on large bands, such as 40A or 42B, are among the hardest sizes to find. See where to buy bras in unusual sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What underbust is a 40 band?
About 39 to 41 inches, or 99 to 104 cm, measured snugly under the bust.
Should I size up in the band for comfort?
A band that is too big is rarely more comfortable over a full day, because the straps and wires end up taking the strain. If a correctly sized band feels harsh, look for a wider, softer band in the same size, or a non-wired style.
Do cups get bigger as the band gets bigger?
Yes. A 42D cup holds much more than a 34D cup. That is why someone moving up a band usually needs to move down a cup letter to keep the same fit.
