What stays the same

Cup volume. A 32E, a 34DD and a 36D are designed to contain the same amount of breast tissue. That part of the theory is sound, and it is why sister sizing is useful.

What changes

The band length

This is the intended change. Each step is about two inches of band.

The wire width

Manufacturers assume a bigger band means a broader body. As the band goes up, the underwire gets wider and flatter for the same cup volume. Going from 32E to 36D, the wire may sit further back under your arm than you need. Going from 36D to 32E, it may sit too narrow and rest on breast tissue at the side.

The cup shape

With the wire, the cup itself changes proportion. On a larger band the same volume is spread wider and stands out less. On a smaller band it is narrower and deeper. If your breasts are narrow and projected, moving up a band can leave you with empty space at the sides. If they are wide and shallow, moving down can leave you squeezed at the sides with a gap at the front.

The straps

Straps are set wider apart on bigger bands. Sister sizing up is a common cause of straps that slip off the shoulders.

The centre panel

The gap between the cups often grows with the band. If your breasts are close together, a larger band may put the centre panel on tissue. If they are wide set, a smaller one may pull the cups too close.

How noticeable is it?

Steps awayExample from 34DWhat to expect
One32DD or 36CDifferences are small. Most people notice only the band.
Two30E or 38BWires and straps noticeably off for many people. Sometimes acceptable in a soft bra.
Three or more28F or 40ABuilt for a different frame. The band will be six inches out and cannot support you.

Which bras tolerate it best

Brands grade differently

How a brand scales a pattern from one size to the next is its own decision. In some ranges, sister sizes feel almost interchangeable. In others the cup changes shape noticeably between bands. A sister size that worked in one bra is a good sign for that style, and no guarantee for another.

What this means in practice

  1. Use a sister size as a one-step adjustment when the cups already fit.
  2. After switching, check the wires and straps as well as the band. Press on the wire at the side to make sure it is on ribcage.
  3. If you find yourself two or more steps from the size you started with, re-measure. Your true size is probably different from what you assumed.

The direction to move in each situation is set out in when to sister size up or down.

Frequently asked questions

How many sister sizes can you go up or down?

One step is dependable. Two steps is a gamble that sometimes works in soft, stretchy bras and rarely in moulded or wired ones. Beyond two, the bra is built for a different body.

Why does my sister size feel different if the volume is the same?

Because the wire width, cup shape, strap position and band length all change with the band size. Volume is the only thing that stays the same.

Is a 34C cup exactly the same as a 32D cup?

It is designed to hold the same volume, but it is not the identical piece. The 34C cup is slightly wider and shallower, and its wire is a little longer. Different brands also grade their sizes differently.
